Are you bombarded daily by television commercials advertising how you can achieve an affordable and beautifully white smile? Chances are you’ve seen and heard a lot about Lumineers — a particular brand of veneers that are made by the DenMat corporation. Unlike traditional porcelain veneers, these Cerinate porcelain veneers are extra thin and their biggest disadvantage is that they can only be manufactured in the DenMat laboratory.
Dr. Bonk’s Views on Prepless Dentistry
Dr. Bonk consults with patients on an individual basis and will consider prepless application of ultra-thin porcelain veneers if he believes it is right for you. When it comes to no tooth preparation, the main drawback is that the artistry of a new smile makeover is more difficult and it often results in a bulky appearance because these types of veneer brands have to be made about 2 millimeters longer. See the before and after photos below.
Because of the trademark restrictions, Dr. Bonk is limited to what he can do for you in terms of creating a custom smile with Lumineers. Unlike other brands of porcelain that Dr. Bonk and his ceramist can custom create, Lumineers can only be manufactured in the DenMat corporate laboratory. As a dentist who has great artistic skills (Dr. Bonk is recognized for his expertise in cosmetic dentistry and teaches other dentists his techniques), he has the ability to work with the constraints that apply to prepless veneer techniques and produce a beautiful result, however, he will choose a brand other than Lumineers.
Before and after with Lumineers: While the teeth are whiter in the
after photo on the right, notice that the patient’s smile wasn’t necessarily
improved because the Lumineers make her teeth look larger and bulkier.
Many expert cosmetic dentists would have recommended simple
teeth whitening for this patient.

His best advice is to consult with a skilled cosmetic dentist who you can trust to give you an accurate evaluation as to whether Lumineers or another ultra-thin brand of porcelain veneers may be right for you.
