Barrington Mercury-Free Dentist
Dental amalgam is a dental filling material used to fill cavities caused by tooth decay. Amalgam fillings, also known as silver fillings, contain about 50 percent mercury, mixed with some silver, tin and copper.
Recent research, however, seems to indicate that amalgam fillings release a very small amount of mercury vapor during chewing — causing much controversy on whether or not this amount of mercury is harmful to the body. While no harm from the mercury in amalgam fillings has ever been proven, many people are still uneasy about the idea of having in their mouth, so they are opting for mercury-free composite fillings.
What are the advantages of mercury-free fillings?
There are several important differences between amalgam and composite fillings aside from the toxicity issue:
- Where amalgam weakens the tooth, composite fillings bond with the tooth, actually restoring its strength
- Composite fillings blend naturally with your teeth because of their color
- Teeth filled with white fillings are less sensitive to hot and cold than teeth restored with amalgam
- Composite fillings require your dentist to remove less of the tooth structure.

fillings contain mercury and actually weaken the tooth structure.
Composite fillings cost significantly more than amalgam fillings and take more skill to place. If you are interested in learning more about mercury-free fillings, please call our office at (847)381-3210 or schedule an appointment.
