Barrington Teeth Whitening
Your smile can say so many things about who you are. Do you look in the mirror every day and see a smile that is stained or yellowed, and long for a beautiful white smile you can flash to the world? Coffee, colored sodas, tobacco and aging are some of the most common causes of discolored or yellowing teeth. Whitening is one of the quickest and easiest ways to regain the confidence to smile again — and look and feel years younger.
Advancements in technology offer patients a variety of options for whiter teeth… it just depends on your desires.
Teeth whitening at home
Dr. Bonk prefers Opalescence Take Home Whitening Gel for teeth whitening. The at-home kit allows you to whiten when it’s convenient for you – during the day, at night or even overnight. Opalescence is only available through a dentist office because it is so strong that is safe to use only under a dentist’s supervision. Dr. Bonk will supervise the whitening process from the time of your first consultation until completion. With Opalescence you will actually improve the health of your teeth because most formulations include Potassium Fluoride (PF), which strengthens enamel, decreases sensitivity, and offers increased cavity prevention.
The teeth whitening process
To get started, Dr. Bonk will take an impression of your teeth so he can mold your custom whitening tray. Once your tray(s) are ready, you can go home and begin whitening. The tray allows the gel to soak into your teeth. You will see an initial improvement even just overnight, but you are encouraged to use the product for at least two weeks, or until you achieve your desired level of whiteness. Once you achieve the desired whiteness, continue with the gel for two or three more days. The color will relapse or darken just slightly as the oxygen bubbles that get embedded in the tooth structure dissipate.
For an instant “smile lift” patients can choose in an office whitening procedure. With Zoom Whitening, you’ll get an immediate, whiter and brighter smile in 90 minutes or less.
What about over-the-counter products?
Many drugstore and discount chains offer a variety of teeth whitening options. While over-the-counter bleaching kits cost less, the concentration of peroxide is also significantly less leaving many users disappointed in the whitening results. Toothpastes that claim to whiten do not remain on the surface of teeth long enough to actually whiten the tooth. At best, they only remove surface stains.
Is teeth whitening permanent?
In a sense, yes. The peroxide in professional whitening gel actually oxidizes stains, making them disappear permanently. But, if you drink coffee or other dark colored beverages, your teeth can continue to absorb new stains over time. Touch ups or maintenance can be easily achieved by requesting a refill of the gel.
